This is a simple, broad, and easy to manage statement; supporting arguments are not linked to each other directly, but support the thesis. Empires show similarities in their governments, economies, and cultures. These similarities show that empires experienced similar challenges and developed similar solutions. |

This example is more focused than the first one, in that it is looking at just one topic shared by empires. The arguments are fairly straightforward and easy to explain. Empires built similar public works to improve the lives of the people. |
